A fairly quiet day overall, with rain encroaching in the early afternoon. Ringing was limited to a Dunnock, Blue Tit and Great Tit in the nets, but moths improved today with a Lunar Hornet Moth and 2 Red-necked Footman of particular note. At least 7 Lesser Whitethroats were around the reserve and both Common and Little Tern flew past the Broadwater.

A family of Lesser Whitethroats fledged today with 5 juveniles ringed. A Cuckoo was again busy around the reserve, and a Grey Wagtail flying over calling was a surprise. On the sea over 1000 Common Scoters, 2 Fulmars, 13 Gannets, 4 Little Terns, 152 Sandwich Terns and 4 Common Terns were noted.

On the sea 200 Common Scoters, a Fulmar, 5 Gannets, 21 Little Terns, 375 Sandwich Terns and a Common Tern were of note, while 2 Spoonbills were of note around the fresh marsh. A Peregrine was also hunting and a Crossbill flew over calling.

Rain for much of the day saw little in the way of bird activity, but the moth catch improved with highlights including 3 Diamond-backs, a Shoulder-striped Wainscot and a Pine Hawk Moth. At Walsey Hills a female Red-backed Shrike was on Snipe's Marsh, while 2 Med Gulls and a Cuckoo were also of note.

Firstly apologises to anyone visiting the website hoping for sightings updates. Unfortunately phone and internet connection was lost over the weekend and the first two days of this week, but as they say, the service has now (hopefully) returned to normal !

Birds of interest today included a Spoonbill west over the grazing Marsh early morning and a Cuckoo frequenting the east bank area mid morning. Moths included the first Sharp-angled Peacock and two Lyme Grass.

A better day weather wise, with the best birds today being Hobby and Cuckoo frequenting the Observatory area and two wheatears on the marsh adjacent to the entrance track.

Unsurprisingly with the strong winds little to report. A Barn Owl was hunting over Redwell Marsh early morning and a Turtle Dove was calling nearby. Several Green hairstreaks were on the dune edge behind the observatory building.

Another breezy, though at least sunny day at the observatory. Bird wise a vocal Cuckoo continued to frequent the area around the east bank. On the adjacent NWT reserve a Spoonbill was present mid morning and a  Spotted Flycatcher was in the pines.

A quiet day, the highlights were a Hobby through over the grazing marsh, 30 Black-tailed Godwits on the NWT and the regular Cuckoo was active near the Broadwater. On the sea 4 Brent Geese, 400 Common Scoters, a Great Crested Grebe, 4 Fulmars, 2 Gannets, 3 Guillemots, 8 auk sp, 536 Sandwich Terns, 30 Common Terns, 4 Arctic Terns, and 2 Little Terns were seen. Moths included 2 Eyed, a Poplar and a Small Elephant Hawk Moth while butterflies included Common Blue, Green Hairstreak and Small Copper. At Walsey Hills 2 Little Stints were viewable on Pope's Marsh and approx. 100 Swifts flew through during the day.

A grey day but with some highlights, including a Hobby hunting the grazing marsh to the south, a Cuckoo flying past calling, 35 Black-tailed Godwits, a summer plumage Golden Plover, 4 Little Terns and a Sandwich Tern along the Broadwater, and steady passage of Swallows, Swifts and House Martins.

At Walsey Hills 4 Little Gulls flew past west, a Curlew Sandpiper was on Pope's Marsh and a Spoonbill was on the Serpentine.

A quiet day with a Cuckoo active around the reserve, a Little Tern and 3 Sandwich Terns along Broadwater, and a Siskin calling in the pines. At Walsey Hills 2 Little Terns were visible on the marshes and around 50 Swifts were milling about above.

On the seawatch today 17 Little Terns, 229 Sandwich Terns and 19 Common Terns were passing. Also of note were a Turtle Dove, 2 Cuckoos, a Lesser Whitethroat, and 2 Black-tailed Godwits.

 

Thursday 21st May 2015

A seawatch produced 1 Fulmar, 24 Little Terns, 103 Sandwich Terns and 6 Common Terns. 2 Turtle Doves flew across the road near the saltings and a Cuckoo was near the Observatory. There was no further sign of the White-fronted Geese, but a Pink-footed Goose and a single Wheatear were still on the grazing marsh. In the evening a Black Stork was seen passing over pines and along the beach, before heading inland towards Old Hunstanton.

Highlights today were 14 Common Scoters, 2 Fulmars, 25 Little Terns, 109 Sandwich Terns and 9 Common Terns on the seawatch, a Firecrest in the pines near the NWT centre, and a Hooded Crow over. At least 3 Wheatears were also of note, and a passage of Swifts and Swallows took place throughout the day. At Walsey Hills 56 Swallows, 25 Sand Martins, 180 Swifts and 3 Red Kites passed through west.

On the sea today counts of 93 Sandwich, !3 Common, 13 Little and one Arctic Tern were noteworthy and in the recording area there were counts of at least 20 Yellow Wagtail, 10 Wheatear and 2 Turtle Doves. The sun brought out a good selection of Butterflies with Green Hairstreak, Brown Argus and Wall Brown all seen well.

A Wryneck on the NWT reserve was very much bird of the day, Grasshopper Warbler and Turtle Dove were also reported plus seven Wheatears. Several Yellow Wagtails were still around the cattle on the grazing marsh and a Spotted flycatcher was in the pines near the observatory morning early morning.

On the sea today a female Red-breasted Merganser was present and 4 Arctic Terns flew through west together with 42 Sandwich Terns, and 12 Little Terns. Also of note were a single Wheatear on the grazing marsh, a Whimbrel, 12 Black-tailed Godwits, and 3 Spotted Flycatchers around the pines. Butterflies included Orange Tip, Brimstone, Green Hairstreak and Small Copper while in the moth trap a Small Elephant Hawk, Frosted Green, and a Ruby Tiger were of note.

Of note today were 3 Gannets, 2 Little Terns and 7 Sandwich Terns offshore, a Spoonbill circling above the Observatory and heading east, a Common Buzzard drifting west, 3 Whimbrel, one Cuckoo, one Barn Owl, 100+ Swifts, a Peregrine, 20 Sand Martins, 6 House Martins, 100+ Swallows, one Lesser Whitethroat and 9 Wheatears. Moths included 2 Small Elephant Hawks, and a Chocolate Tip, and butterflies included Brown Argus, Small Copper and Green Hairstreak.

At Walsey Hills a fairly quiet day with 75 Swallows through west and 6 Green Hairstreaks around the reserve.

At the Observatory 2 Spotted Flycatchers were in the pines to the north of the Richardson Hide, and 8 Little Terns, 2 Sandwich Terns, a Common Tern, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 12 Whitethroats, 10 Sedge Warblers, 2 Reed Warblers, and 5 Yellow Wagtails were also noted.

At Walsey Hills a Turtle Dove flew through south-east and 4 Yellow Wagtails were also counted.

On the sea today 11 Little Terns, 51 Sandwich Terns and a Common Tern were counted. On the grazing marsh there were 3 Pink-feet, 6 Barnacle Geese, 100+ Brent Geese, 6 Black-tailed Godwits, a single Snipe, and 4 Ruff. Two Whinchats were near the entrance to the NWT reserve and Turtle Dove and Cuckoo were heard in the paddocks. Other migrants of note included 8 Wheatears, 2 Tree Pipits, 3 Yellow Wagtails and 8 Tree Sparrows.

Six Barnacle Geese were still around the grazing marsh today but there was no further sign of the mysterious Bar-headed Goose! Seawatching produced 3 Little Terns, 53 Sandwich Terns, 5 Common Terns and 2 Arctic Terns, and a Cuckoo, 150+ Swifts, a Peregrine, 6 Sand Martins, 40 Swallows, 3 Blackcaps, 5 Lesser Whitethroats, 8 Whitethroats, 10 Sedge Warblers, and a Reed Warbler were noted. 3 Whinchats were in fields near the NWT hides and around 10 Wheatears were on the grazing marshes, with at least 4 Yellow Wagtails among the cattle.

The flock of six Barnacle Geese were still on the grazing marsh and a Blue-headed wagtail was amongst a flock of around 25 Yellow Wagtails also on the grazing marsh. Three wheatear were adjacent to the entrance track early morning.

Monday 4th May 2015

A breezy but summery day with plenty of birds. The flock of 6 Barnacle Geese were still on the marsh, and migrants included 2 Whimbrel, 2 Cuckoos, 2 Swifts, 4 Sand Martins, 30 Swallows, a House Martin, 2 Grasshopper Warblers, 3 Whinchats and 3 Wheatears. On the sea 18 Sandwich Terns and 11 Little Terns flew past, and a Tree Pipit and 6 Yellow Wagtails flew over calling. Butterflies included Green Hairstreak, Brimstone, Small Copper and Speckled Wood.

Heavy rain kept most birds under cover for the first part of the day. A group of 6 Barnacle Geese were on the marsh, together with a single Whimbrel, a male Ruff, 2 Sandwich Terns past the Broadwater, a single Swift over west, a Sand Martin, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Whitethroats, 2 Grasshopper Warblers, 5 Sedge Warblers, 1 Reed Warbler, and a male Whinchat on the marsh opposite the Observatory. Five Green Hairstreaks and four Small Coppers were also out in the brief sunshine.

Highlights were 5 Pink-feet on the grazing marsh, a group of 8 Barnacle Geese over east, 7 Sandwich and 4 Common Terns out to sea, a Grasshopper Warbler reeling near the Observatory building, a Barn Owl hunting early morning, a Cuckoo on the fence along the east bank, and 5 Blackcaps, 6 Lesser Whitethroats, 8 Whitethroats, 6 Sedge Warblers and 2 Reed Warblers were singing. A Redstart was in the forestry on the NWT and at least 2 Yellow Wagtails flew over calling.

A Cuckoo was calling early on, and 4 Whimbrel, 6 Swallows, 2 Chiffchaffs, 3 Blackcaps, 7 Whitethroats, 2 Grasshopper Warblers, 10 Sedge Warblers, 3 Reed Warblers, 2 Whinchats, and 6 Wheatears were recorded. A female Ring Ouzel was at Gore Point.
