Thursday 2nd July 2009

At Holme NOA seawatching produced 5 Eider, 1 Fulmar, 2 Gannets, 14 Sandwich Terns, 13 Common Terns and 3 Little Terns. A Turtle Dove was in the dunes and a Cetti's Warbler was singing. A Treecreeper was in the pines.

 

Moths included 2 Kent Black Arches, 2 July Highflyers, a V-pug, a Pinion-streaked Snout, 2 Eyed Hawks and 2 Pine Hawks.

 

At Redwell Marsh a Wood Sandpiper, 2 Ruff and 10 Black-tailed Godwits were of note.

 

Wednesday 1st July 2009

At Holme NOA highlights were a Greenshank and a Green Sandpiper on the marsh, 2 Turtle Doves, 25 Swifts 15 Swallows east, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, 4 Whitehtroats, 2 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow Warblers and 2 Treecreepers.

 

A signficant catch of moths included a 2 Privet Hawks, 2 Elephant Hawks, 2 Pine Hawks, a True Lover's Knot, Small Rivulet, 3 Swallowtails, 2 Kent Black Arches, a Peach Blossom and a Lyme Grass.

 

At Redwell Marsh a Wood Sandpiper was on the main scrape together with a single Black-tailed Godwit.

 

 

Tuesday 30th June 2009

A brighter, hotter day permitted an hour seawatch which produced 14 Common Scoter, 13 Gannets, 1 Fulmar, 102 Sandwich Terns, 26 Common Terns and 2 Little Terns. A Green Sandpiper flew along the Broadwater and a Cetti's Warbler was singing.

 

Moths included a Buff Tip, 3 Kent Black Arches, 14 Diamond Backs, 2 Shore Wainscots, a Double Lobed, 3 Striped Wainscot, a Small Angle Shades, 2 Pine Hawks and a Poplar Hawk.

Monday 29th June 2009

At Holme NOA seawatching was impossible due to thick fog which persisted throughout the day. However, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Greenshank, 2 Green Sandpipers, a Cetti's Warbler, 4 Sedge Warblers, 2 Reed Warblers, a Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Whitethroats, 1 Chiffchaff and 2 Crossbills were of note around the reserve.

 

Moths included 2 Kent Black Arches, 32 Diamond-back Moths, 3 Pines Hawks, 3 Peppered Moths, 4 Lyme Grass, 4 Swallowstails, a Rosy Wave, 1 Privet Hawk and a Lime Hawk Moth. Butterflies included 4 Ringlets, 4 Painted Ladies and a Red Admiral.

 

Sunday 28th June 2009

At Holme NOA a Spotted Redshank flew along the Broadwater and a Greenshank was calling. 5 Crossbills were around the pines for much of the day, and a Treecreeper was in with the tit flock.

Moths included Pine, Privet, Elephant, Small Elephant and Eyed Hawk, together with 63 Diamond Backs and 2 Kent Black Arches.

 

At Redwell Marsh 3 Green Sandpipers, a Wood Sandpiper, 2 Ruff and 2 Cuckoos were of note.

Saturday 27th June 2009

At Holme NOA another foggy morning prevented seawatching, however a Greenshank and a juvnile Cetti's Warbler ringed were of particular note. Moths included a Large and 4 Small Elephant Hawks, 2 Shore Wainscots, a Drinker and a Barred Red.

 

Friday 26th June 2009

At Holme NOA early fog was cleared late morning by a cooling easterly breeze. a Black-tailed Godwit was of note over the marsh and a Green Sandpiper flew over the Broadwater. A Cuckoo was still calling and a single Swallow, one Grey Wagtail, a Cetti's Warbler, a Reed Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, a Whitethroat, 6 Chiffchaffs and 5 Siskins were of note.

 

Moths included 9 Diamond-backs, 3 Peppered Moths, 3 Elephant Hawks, 1 Eyed Hawk, 3 Striped Wainscots, a Silver Y, a Barred Red, a Marbled White-spot and a Purple Clay.

Wednesday 24th June 2009

A bright but breezy day prevented ringing but seawatching produced 3 Gannets, 22 Sandwich Terns, 6 Common Terns and 2 Little Terns. 2 Greenshank flew over calling and a Marsh Harrier was hunting. A single Swallow was on wires by the Firs and a Cetti's Warbler was singing.

 

Moths included Elephant and Small Elephant Hawk, Common Emerald, 2 Shoulder-striped Wainscots, a Shore Wainscot, 2 Spectacles and a Rosy Wave. The first Grayling put in an appearance and a Ringlet, 2 Painted Ladies and a Red Admiral were also of note. Three Dark Green Fritillaries were in the dunes.

 

At Redwell Marsh two Green Sandpipers and 17 Black-tailed Godwits were of interest.

Tuesday 23rd June 2009

A warm, humid night produced a good haul in the moth traps with over 50 species trapped, these included Lime, Poplar, Eyed and Elephant Hawks, Shark, Fern, Red Necked Footman and two Shore Wainscot and Lyme Grass.

Not a lot to report on the bird front, although 3 Chiffchaff and a Reed Warbler trapped were migrants going somewhere. On the broadwater a brood of Gadwall were seen and a male Ruddy Duck, passing overhead were 7 Lapwing 3 Curlew, Greenshank and Green Sandpiper, failed northern breeders?

Just out of our recording area in Thornham a male Red Backed Shrike was reported.

Monday 22nd June 2009

At Holme NOA seawatching produced 220 Common Scoter, 16 Gannets, 80 Sandwich Terns, 12 Common Terns, 25 Little Terns and 20 Oystercatchers. A Little Egret, 16 Bar-tailed Godwits, a Green Sandpiper, 2 Turtle Doves, 30 Swifts, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Mistle Thrushes and a juvenile Willow Warbler were also of interest.

 

Moths included 2 Privet Hawks, 2 Common Footmen, 30 Cinnabars, 19 Common Swifts, 3 Shore Wainscots, 1 Silky Wainscot and 2 Light Arches.

 

Sunday 21st June 2009

Seawatching highlights were 15 Common Scoter, a Great Crested Grebe, 23 Gannets, 37 Sandwich Terns, 20 Common Terns and 21 Little Terns.  A single Crossbill flew over the pines and headed west. Raptors included 3 Marsh Harriers, 2 Sparrowhawks, 1 Buzzard and a Hobby. 2 Greenshanks and 2 Green Sandpipers were of note. Around the reserve 2 Turtle Doves, a Cuckoo, 2 Barn Owls, 10 Swifts, 1 Swallow, a juvenile Mistle Thrush, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 6 Lesser Whitethroats and a Blackcap.

 

Moths included 3 Peppered Moths, 2 Pine Hawks, a Silky Wainscot, a Light Arches, 1 Lyme Grass, 2 Shore Wainscots, a Cream Bordered Green Pea, a Pinion-streaked Snout and a Barred Red. Butterflies included 6 Painted Ladies, 5 Speckled Woods and a Red Admiral.

Saturday 20th June 2009

A grey but warm day with drizzle moving in during the afternoon. Three Grey Herons flew west over the marsh and 10 Pochard were on the Broadwater. A Hobby was of note together with 1 Turtle Dove 12 Swifts, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 4 Sedge Warblers, 3 Reed Warblers 4 Lesser Whitethroats, 10 Whitethroats, 2 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs and 8 Goldfinches.

 

Moth trapping produced 50 species including a Common White Wave, Riband Wave, Sand Dart, Large Fruit Tree Tortrix, a Coxcomb Prominent, 5 Shore Wainscots, 2 Lychnis, a White-spotted Pug, a Small and 3 Large Elephant Hawks, a Privet Hawk, a Lyme Grass and a Drinker Moth. Painted Ladies and Speckled Woods were numerous with four Meadow Browns also noted.

 

Friday 19th June 2009

A warm but breezy day, seawatching highlights at Holme NOA were a Little Egret on the beach, 6 Eider on the beach, a Fulmar and 6 Gannets past west, a single Common Tern and 4 Little Terns. Also of note were 2 Cetti's Warblers, a Lesser Whitethroat and 2 Chiffchaffs.

 

Moth highlights were a Privet and 2 Elephant Hawk Moths, a Silver Y, 2 Lyme Grass, 1 Light Emerald and 3 Shore Wainscots. Butterflies included 4 Painted Ladies and a Peacock.

Thursday 18th June 2009

A quiet day, highlights at Holme NOA were a Fulmar, 8 Sandwich Terns, 6 Common Terns and 7 Little Terns on the seawatch, and a variety of singing warblers including Cetti's, Sedge, Reed, Blackcap and Chiffchaff.

 

Moths included a good selection of hawks including Large and Small Elephant, Eyed and Privet. 2 Lyme Grass, a Silky Wainscot, a Common Emerald and the Fern were also of note, together with Crombruggia distans.

Wednesday 17th June 2009

A cool breezy day produced 3 Little Egrets, 1 Cuckoo, 20+ Swifts, a Cetti's Warbler, 1 Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap and 145 Starlings east. Seawatch highlights were 7 Eider, 1 Fulmar, 4 Gannets, 12 Sandwich Terns and 12 Little Terns.

 

Not surprisingly the moth catch was poorer than in recent days with just 13 species in the traps including 3 Buff Ermines, 3 Lyme Grass and a Figure of 80. However a superb Eyed Hawk was in the catching box of the heligoland trap. Butterflies included a Painted Lady and a Speckled Wood.

 

Tuesday 16th June 2009

Seawatch highlights were 15 Common Scoter, 3 Fulmars, 2 Gannets, 11 Sandwich Terns, 4 Common Terns and 29 Little Terns. Also of note were 2 Black-tailed Godwits, a Cuckoo, 2 Grey Wagtails over, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and 1 Chiffchaff.

 

Moths included a Scroched Wing, a Spectacle, 1 Drinker and a Rosy Wave.

Monday 15th June 2009

Thunderstorms prevented observations in the afternoon (and the update of the website!!) but seawatching produced 8 Eider, 105 Common Scoter, 6 Fulmars, 8 Gannets, 15 Sandwich Terns, 5 Common Terns and 38 Little Terns. A single Swallow was of note and a Cetti's Warbler was still present.

 

Moths included a superb Green Arches, 26 Common Swifts, 3 Privet Hawks, 1 Small Elephant Hawk, a Figure of 80, 1 Silver Y, 1 Rosy Wave, 1 Shaded Pug and a Wormwood Pug. 

 

Sunday 14th June 2009

At Holme NOA 5 Pochard and 3 Tufted Duck were on the broadwater. A Cuckoo was calling and 2 Swifts and 6 Swallows were counted. 2 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Sedge and 3 Reed Warblers were also recorded, together with a Lesser Whitethroat, a Blackcap and a Willow Warbler. 4 Siskins flew over calling.

 

A major catch of 77 species of moths included 3 Diamond Backs, 2 Rush Veneers, 29 Common Swifts, 2 Lyme Grass, 2 Light Emeralds, 1 Poplar and 2 Eyed Hawks, a Pinion-streaked Snout, 4 Ferns, an Iron Prominent 2 Flame Wainscots, a Silky Wainscot, a Cream Bordered Green Pea, a Shore Wainscot, a Striped Wainscot, and a single Rosy Wave. Butterflies included a Red

 

Saturday 13th June 2009

At Holme NOA seawatching highlights were 4 Eider, 70 Common Scoter, 5 Fulmars, 10 Sandwich Terns, 6 Common Terns and 38 Little Terns. Also of note were a Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Grasshopper Warbler and a single Siskin over calling.

 

Butterflies included Painted Lady, Brown Argus and Common Blue. Moth highlights were a Puss Moth, Eyed Hawk Moth, Elephant Hawk Moth and the first Large Yellow Underwing of the year.

 

Friday 12th June 2009

At Holme NOA seawatching included 1 Eider, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 10 Fulmars, 3 Gannets, 25 Sandwich Terns, 4 Common Terns and 96 Little Terns.

 

Moths included 3 Pine Hawks, 2 Poplar Hawks and an Eyed Hawk.

 

Thursday 11th June 2009

At Holme NOA Seawatching produced 13 Eider, 1 Fulmar, 3 Sandwich Terns, 6 Common Terns and 35 Little Terns. a Marsh Harrier and a Kestrel were hunting and a Cetti's, 1 Sedge and 3 Reed Warblers were heard.

 

Moths included 2 Pine Hawks, 1 Poplar Hawk, 21 Cinnabars, 12 Common Swifts, 2 Small Elephants, 1 Elephant Hawk and a Barred Straw. Butterflies included 3 Painted Ladies, 1 Wall Brown and a Speckled Wood.

At Holme NOA highlights were a Turtle Dove, 6 Swifts, 4 Swallows, 2 singing Cetti's Warblers, a Sedge and 3 Reed Warblers, 2 Siskins in the pines and 2 Bullfinches in the scrub.

 

Moths of note included Red-necked Footman, White Point, Diamond-back, 4 Silver Ys, a Privet Hawk Moth, 2 Elephant Hawks, 4 Small Elephant Hawks, a Snout, 1 Small Magpie, 2 Lime Speck Pugs and 1 White-spotted Pug. Butterflies included Painted Lady and Brown Argus.

Tuesday 9th June 2009

A damp overcast morning was enlivened by the capture of a Turtle Dove, also of note were Little Egret, 2 Marsh Harriers, 4 Bar Tailed Godwit and 5 Eider, the latter roosting on the beach. The Black Winged Pratincole is still present this morning, we can see the ploughed field and quite a few observers from the obs but unfortunately not the bird!

In the moth traps today were 7 Small Elephant, 3 Large Elephant, 2 Pine and a single Pine, Hawk moths that is. Also of note Pale Tussock,Peppered,2 Brown Rustic, 2 Dogs Tooth and 2 Silver Y.
